Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are a new class of environmentally friendly electrolyte solvents with similar properties to ionic liquids (ILs) and provide an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional organic solvents. By this definition, DES is a mixture of two compounds with a significantly lower melting point than the parent substances. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are a new generation of solvents that can overcome the main drawbacks of conventional ILs, namely high toxicity, biodegradability, complex synthesis requiring purification, and high cost of starting materials. They are obtained by simply mixing two components (cheap, renewable, and biodegradable) that can form a eutectic mixture.
In my diploma thesis, I am investigating the possibility of using a selected deep eutectic solvents for the process of carbonization with flue gasses, which is being developed in the Belinka Perkemija d.o.o. company. I prepared different DES with different weight ratios of water, determined the saturated solubility of carbon dioxide and calcium hydroxide first in water and then in the prepared DES and compared the results.
