The diploma thesis, Digitally Illustrated Portraits and Analysis of Conveying Emotion Through Facial Expressions, describes the process of creating a digital illustration of a portrait in three different styles, each portrait expressing one of the basic emotions.
The theoretical part defines digital illustration and styles of digital illustration known today. The definition of facial proportions and different views of the face are presented, the six basic emotions are described and the characteristics of the facial expressions of each emotion are demonstrated. Some examples of good practice are also presented.
The practical part describes the process of digital illustration of portraits in three different styles. We have chosen three digital illustration styles that differ in their level of realism, facial proportions, amount of detail and number of colours used. Additionally, it is determined which five emotions will be illustrated in which style. We specified the document settings, the characteristics of the brushes used, the tools for editing the layers, the way to select the colour palette and the process of illustrating each style separately. The illustrating steps included finding appropriate references, sketching, drawing images, applying colour and adding detail. An iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil were used to create the portraits. The illustrations were made in the programme Procreate. The final product is a collection of fifteen digitally illustrated portraits, showing the characters in three different illustration styles, conveying five different emotions. The results describe the created portraits and analyse the depiction of facial expressions in different styles of illustration. The differences in the appearance of certain features of the emotion portrayal according to the style are described for each emotion. The acquired and upgraded knowledge in the field of digital illustration is commented on.
