Deinstitutionalization is a process that has been talked about for many years, but changes in this direction are relatively small and mostly slow. An example of good practice is Dom na Krasu, which is currently in the process of transformation and their work in the direction of deinstitutionalization is progressing. The social workers who are employed in the social institution Dom na Krasu also have a role in this, so it is important to address their experiences as well. In my graduation thesis, I researched the role of social workers and the role of social work in deinstitutionalization. In the theoretical part I addressed the total institutions and total institutions related to social work, and the work with users who have mental health problems. Then I described the methods of social work that are in the foreground when working in an institution, and specifically in social work heading to deinstitutionalization. I also defined deinstitutionalization itself and focused on deinstitutionalization in Slovenia. Community services and community forms of living are strongly related to deinstitutionalization, which is why I presented this topic as well. Finally, I focused specifically on Dom na Krasu and their transformation project. I used a qualitative research and conducted six partially standardized interviews with social workers from the Dom na Krasu institution to obtain data. I used the interview guidelines as the measuring instrument. I qualitatively analyzed the obtained data and wrote down the results. I found out that social workers can contribute to deinstitutionalization through social work, but the contribution depends on several factors. At the end, I made suggestions for better work in the direction of deinstitutionalization.
