Abstract

Title:Comparison of mechanical properties of ultrasonic welded joints made of PSU GF30
Abstract:
Nowadays, the use of polymer materials is very popular, and as a result, we frequently come across different techniques for joining them together. One of the widely used methods for joining polymer materials is ultrasonic welding, which is prevalent in all fields where polymers are utilized, such as toy manufacturing, production of various machinery casings, packaging in the food industry, etc. In this final project, we focused on analyzing the thermoplastic polymer PSU GF30. In the first part of the experimental setup, we analyzed the mechanical properties of the base material, cut from a plate in the direction of extrusion and perpendicular to the extrusion direction. In the second part, we welded the plates in an overlapping joint using ultrasonic welding. During this process, we varied technological parameters such as penetration depth and plate overlap size. We found that samples produced parallel to the extrusion direction had 50% higher shear strength compared to samples cut perpendicular to the extrusion direction. The best strength properties were achieved with the smallest overlap and shallowest penetration depth, while consuming a smaller amount of energy.
