In my thesis I present the strengthening of parenting competences in families with young children. In the theoretical part I presented family education, the effects of education on children's social adjustment, child development in the pre-school period, the problem of raising inconsistency and the strengthening of parental competences. In the research I focused on the ways of support and help that professionals provide to parents with upbringing challenges. In the thesis I wanted to work from the perspective of social work, but due to the different profiles of the employees in the organisations and institutions I decided to use the term professionals.
The research I have done is qualitative. I used a semi-standardised interview to collect data. The thesis is based on the stories and narratives of practitioners who work in fields where they encounter parents who have challenges in parenting. I was particularly interested in how practitioners perceive parents who might need support in raising their children, what are the common problems of parents who need support in raising their children, what are the methods of support and help they use with these parents, how does the support for parents result in a change in the child's behaviour in kindergarten and what is the success rate of the support provided to parents.
I have found that parents have the most difficulty in setting boundaries. The most used parenting style among parents is permissive parenting. The consequences of this type of parenting for the child are confusion, aggression, lack of independence, emotional-behavioural problems, egocentrism. The professionals deal with parents with parenting problems almost daily. Parents' willingness to cooperate depends on their motivation. The types of support and help available to parents are counselling, discussion, sharing the experience of others, individual help, workshops, information about help, and lay support for families at home. Professional workers sometimes refer users elsewhere. Most often to the Strengthening Families programme, psychological support, mental health centre, health centre. The success of the support and help provided depends on the cooperation of the parents.
