Thinking about language is a basic issue in Slovenian contemporary poetic discourse in Italy. This article identifies various linguistic positions that can be identified in texts published in the twenty-first century. Some poems reflect a traditional language paradigm, in which language is a reliable mediator of personal and collective destiny. At other points, poems show the distress of language, which in the poetic self creates uncertainty and leads to denial. A further, more relaxed attitude toward language can be seen when the native language loses its symbolic value, becoming only a communicative and interchangeable expression.
