Slovenia boasts a rich cultural heritage of castle architecture that has played an exceptionally important role in the country's history over the millennia. Castles, defined by their vast land holdings, have functioned as economic, administrative, defensive, and cultural centers. While castles can be seen as the pinnacle of medieval architecture in Slovenian territory, they can also be understood as symbols of the oppression of Slovenian peasants. This negative connotation of castles came to the fore with the abolition of feudal social order, implemented through land reforms in 1848. During World War II and the decades that followed, numerous castles were destroyed, burned, looted, or repurposed inappropriately. The consequences of this neglect of castle architecture can still be observed in Slovenia today, as we continue to ponder what to do with the many deteriorating castle walls.
Similar to numerous castles throughout Slovenia, the cultural heritage of Podčetrtek Castle has suffered a similar fate of decay. Podčetrtek Castle, with its rich thousand-year history, represents a cultural heritage of exceptional social significance upon which the cultural identity of the people of Podčetrtek is based. The immediate proximity of the castle, which overlooks the medieval square, raises an important question: how to revitalize this cultural monument with a program that meets the needs of modern society while preserving its historical and cultural value.
By employing a comprehensive approach based on theoretical foundations of castle architecture, cultural heritage preservation, analysis of the broader and narrower area of the town of Podčetrtek, and Podčetrtek Castle, this project identifies Podčetrtek Castle as a bearer of cultural identity. It proposes the incorporation of a new program for a multipurpose cultural center for the Obsotelje and Kozjansko regions.
The current economic structure of Podčetrtek is exclusively based on tourism, which began to develop in the second half of the 20th century in the form of spa tourism (Terme Olimia). The understanding of tourism at the local level, characterized by exceptional adaptability and quality of tourism offerings, has played a crucial role in its development and positioned Podčetrtek among the strongest spa destinations. At this point, an important question arises: what role does tourism play in the future of Podčetrtek Castle, and how can the municipality of Podčetrtek utilize the current form of tourism with market logic and redirect it towards cultural tourism? With the new program for a multipurpose cultural center, Podčetrtek Castle does not become just another tourist attraction catering to visitors. As a bearer of the cultural identity of the Podčetrtek area, it becomes an important space for gathering and exchanging ideas, offering new opportunities for quality education and cultural engagement to the residents of the broader and narrower Podčetrtek region.
