The thesis deals with the rich legacy of the first botanist of Slovenian origin Franc Hladnik. First, the beginning of botanical science on Slovenian soil and the interest in garden art are described. Next, important botanists who contributed to the development of botanical science in Slovenia in the 18th and 19th centuries are briefly presented. The central part presents the life of Franc Hladnik, his botanical research, new plant species and the establishment of the botanical garden in Ljubljana. At the end, Hladnik's students, who became important botanists, are also presented.
