Abstract
In machining, particularly of difficult-to-machine materials, chip-breaking with the aim to avoid entangled chips represents an important issue. In contrast to the widely used obstacle-induced chip breaking (e.g., chip former on the rake face of the cutting insert), the use of the high-pressure jet offers a potential for active, load-induced chip control. In this paper, the essential mechanics of the high-pressure jet assisted machining process is revealed by a robust analytical model as an elastic-plastic bending of a helical chip considering the spring-back effect. The description of the helical chip geometry and the determination of the bending moment caused by the jet are adapted to the fundamental model of chip-mechanics. The critical bending moment of the chip breakage is assessed, which could be an important step towards the determination of the critical coolant supply pressure. The model is validated by chip-in-hand radius measurements for various turning conditions over the full range of applied coolant pressure up to chip breakage.
