Josip Tavčar, a playwright who developed his Slovene consciousness in accordance with his multicultural identity made his mark among the post-war writers of Trieste, along with Boris Pahor and Alojz Rebula. After the successof his first Slovene drama Next Sunday (1957) he used his second work Hell is After All Hell (1959) to unfold his relationship to the modern world and the consumer society. In pointing out the problems of Western civilisation and the steady decline into a hopeless situation, Josip Tavčar reflected his personal authenticity or the responsibility of living in his own time and place.
