A large part of Toporišič's linguistic work is comprised of treatments of topics pertaining to the history of the Slovene (standard) language. These treatments cover all periods of language development and their characteristic phenomena, from the Freising Manuscripts to the early 20th century, as well as the work and achievements (particularly the grammars) of the major linguists and authors who reflected on language (e.g., Trubar, Bohorič, Pohlin, Gutsman, Vodnik, Kopitar, Janežič, Valjavec, Miklošič, Škrabec, Pleteršnik, Breznik). In addition, Toporišič frequently shed light on current linguistic issues from the point of view of language development.
