The Bachelors’ thesis discusses the suffix -kinja for the formation of the expressions for female persons in the Slovenian language. The purpose is to present the suffix -kinja and observe its developmental tendencies and the formation productivity for the naming of feminine persons. The research part is therefore based on the collection, presentation, syntactic word-formative analysis and further comparative analysis of feminative derivatives with the suffix -kinja from the Dictionary of Maks Pleteršnik (1894/95) and Dictionary of the Slovenian Standard Language 2 (2014). The results of the study show that the productivity of the suffix -kinja has decreased throughout linguistic development, especially in the formation of ordinary derivatives by suffixation. Other, variant feminine suffixes, most often -ka and -ica, have begun to replace it with the formation of variant forms. Nevertheless, the suffix kinja is still present in the Slovenian language and it is productive mainly within the formation pattern of feminine interfixal-suffixal compounds from the verb “voditi” (e. g. “računovodkinja”).
