The article describes different approaches to the study of word-formation: functional, cognitive and their synthesis - a cognitive-discursive approach. It analyses from the cognitive perspective six functions of word-formation resources and some particularities of their implementation. Examples of Slovene neologisms from Slovar novejšega besedja slovenskega jezika are used and Russian nonce-words from the novel Konec filʹma, ili gipsovyj trubač by Yuriy Polyakov.
