The Popularity of Washington Irving’s "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" within the Field of Adaptation

The MA thesis deals with Washington Irving’s short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and its various adaptations, especially with regard to performance mode. Its main focus is to explore Irving’s tale within the process of adaptation in various media and to compare some of the key elements of the source text to adaptations. The thesis argues that each adaptation exhibits some originality of its own, containing the features that the source text does not have and reflecting the values of today’s society.

Abstract

Pričujoče magistrsko delo se ukvarja s kratko zgodbo Washingtona Irvinga z naslovom "Legenda o Speči dolini" in njenimi številnimi adaptacijami z vidika uprizoritvenega načina. Glavni cilj je raziskava Irvingove zgodbe znotraj procesa adaptacije v različnih medijih in primerjava ključnih elementov v izvirnem besedilu in adaptacijah. Magistrsko delo zagovarja tezo, da vsaka adaptacija izkazuje svoje vrste originalnost, saj vključuje elemente, ki jih prvotna Irvingova zgodba ne vsebuje, in odseva vrednote sodobne družbe.
