With the development of new transport technologies, there are major changes in the whole
transportation process. In any case, one of the most important changes in the development of
containerization is that bulk cargo is shipped in one transport unit. Today, most bulk cargo in
intercontinental transport is shipped in container units. Containers gained even more
importance when they began to be transported overland in intermodal traffic. This type of
transport allows efficient handling of goods at intermodal hubs or terminals. The diploma thesis
describes the organization of such a mode of operation by the container terminal in Luka Koper
d. d. when shipping containers to terminals in Central Europe. In addition to the theoretical
work describing the organization of intermodal transport in general, the opinions of two
forwarders organizing intermodal transport through the port were included in the study. The
companies see possibilities for improvement in the transfer of data between the participants, in
the use of computer programs and in the modernization of the railway infrastructure, which
currently has only one track from Koper to Divača. In addition to modernizing the
infrastructure, the company Slovenske železnice d. o. o. also needs to look at strengthening its
staff in order to eliminate bottlenecks at stations.
