Drama, in a direct and inseparable way, simultaneously belongs to verbal and theatrical art. It is a specific book genre, as it is distinguished from others by the characteristics of the writing, such as the names of the performers and stage directions or didaskalia. There are many possibilities for the design of play scripts and text typesetting, but it is important that readability is still preserved even with a more modern approach. Through the very design, implementation of illustrations and colors, we wanted to communicate the atmosphere of the work to the reader, even before starting to read.
The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate the steps in the process of designing and typesetting a play script, including the design of illustrations and the book cover. We wanted to show the steps in the process of planning and designing the book itself, where the final solution is a properly designed and printed book that meets the expectations of usability, efficiency and aesthetic appearance. The goal of the thesis was to find an appropriate design solution that would connect text with the illustrations, and to design a book that would be both timeless and modern in its form and approach.
The theoretical part of the thesis covers the basic division of books and presents dramatic works in more detail, as well as parts of books in general and graphic elements of dramatic works, which are divided into internal and external. With the help of all this information, we started planning our own book and developing the idea. In the experimental part, all steps in the process of creating and designing a dramatic work are presented in more detail.
In the subsequent planning and design process, we analysed the book content and defined the conceptual form of the book. In this phase, we also analysed similar books and looked for relevant references, which served as inspiration for our own development of style. In the final stage, we designed the book according to the defined style and after typesetting the two-page spread. At the end we presented and discussed the fully designed book.
