In my master's thesis, I am researching the relationships between users and personal assistants. We know that quality interpersonal relationships in the workplace are crucial and an important motivating factor for work. In order to develop and maintain good and effective relationships in the workplace, it is necessary to master the basic skills of communication, mutual knowledge and trust, mutual acceptance and confirmation, and constructive conflict resolution.
In the theoretical part of my master's thesis, I present the concept of independent living, the human rights of people with disabilities and the rights of people with disabilities in Slovenian legislation. Then I define the concept of personal assistance, its history in Slovenia, followed by the legal basis of personal assistance and the importance of interpersonal relationships.
In the qualitative research, I interviewed 18 people, namely nine users and nine personal assistants. The purpose of the research was to determine what kind of relationships develop during the implementation of personal assistance between users and personal assistants and what obstacles or problems they face during the implementation of personal assistance. The purpose of the research was to determine what kind of relationships develop during the implementation of personal assistance between users and personal assistants and what obstacles or problems they face during the implementation of personal assistance.
Based on the results, I found that personal assistance to users means a big, better life, something most important, help with daily tasks and a more independent life. It provides users with all the services they need, although some of them might need extra help or more hours of help from time to time. Users interact with personal assistants on the basis of a relationship based on trust, satisfaction, customization, knowing the user well, and the relationship being okay, great.
Personal assistants are satisfied with their work. Job satisfaction is related to satisfaction with the contractor, as personal assistants find it important to have a predetermined schedule.
The contractor was described as being reasonable, flexible, approachable and that they had his support. Personal assistants interact with users based on a relationship based on trust; satisfaction; super understanding; emotional connection and that the relationship is correct and excellent.
