Competence in Slovenian is of key importance for successful integration of the increasing number of immigrants in Slovenia. This article presents the findings of a study based on sociolinguistic interviews with eleven speakers of Slovenian as a second language. It focuses on their experiences in communicating with speakers of Slovenian as a first language, how frequently they use Slovenian, their language attitudes, and their perception of varieties in Slovenian as spoken by themselves and Slovenian speakers.
