Abstract

Title:The influence of Walter Scott on Slovenian and Spanish historical novel
Abstract:
In the 19th century, many important events took place, including wars for independence, technological progress, industrialization, and the development of literary genres, including the historical novel, which was pioneered by Walter Scott. Although the period in the first half of the 19th century is often referred to as the Romantic era, the historical novel was a breakthrough in the way novels were written up to that point. Scott introduced innovations that spread throughout Europe and had a significant impact on the further development of the novel. He had a significant influence on both Slovenian and Spanish writers, and in Slovenia, he was decisive in the creation of the first Slovenian novel. In this thesis, I first explore Scott's writing style, why he could become such an important and strong influence, and how Slovenian and Spanish novelists adopted his writing style. For this, I rely on two of his novels - The Antiquary and Ivanhoe.
