Abstract

Title:A collection of book covers inspired by Haruki Murakami's novels
Abstract:
This diploma thesis shows the possibilities of the use and commercial placement of surface pattern designs in the book and stationery market. It examines the evolution of cover and dust jacket design through time with designers’ historical and contemporary role in the advancement of books and accompanying product sales. The objective of the diploma thesis was to create a collection of patterns for the design purposes of a dust jacket and stationery products. These would later be sold alongside books in the bookstores. The pattern collection is based on personal experience while reading Haruki Murakami’s book 1Q84 and depicts the story Town of cats. This contemporary and commercial collection of patterns consists of two hero patterns and four coordinates which were applied to stationery product mockups for marketing and presentation purposes.
