In Slovenia, the average age of the population has been steadily increasing over time, as is typical for most developed countries. Thanks to advances in medicine, people are living longer, and many enter their third phase of life with plenty of energy and with the physical ability to take care of themselves. As the needs of the older population change, it is necessary to provide new forms of housing that will enable residents to remain as independent and socially engaged as possible. The goal of this master’s thesis is to connect and consolidate different types of accommodations for the elderly that provide various levels of assistance, allowing residents to stay in the same environment despite any decline in their psycho-physical abilities. The program includes assisted living apartments, communal households, a day center, units for people with dementia, and additional public program. In ensuring the social participation of the elderly for as long as possible, spatial location and an interesting program, also appealing to outside visitors, are essential. The housing development is located not far from the center of Domžale, between the Mlinščica stream and the Kamniška Bistrica river, which offers many opportunities for active leisure time. The central space, defined by the new buildings, is primarily intended for interpersonal interactions and spending time with animals, which have a beneficial effect on people’s overall well-being.
