The thesis presents and describes the turning process and the operation of universal lathes with their key components. The geometry of conventional machines is presented in detail, the process of scraping surfaces and achieving surface quality is described, as well as the levelling and centring procedures of a universal lathe. The complete general renovation of the universal lathe is presented, describing the overhaul of mechanical parts, the grinding of the guides, the construction of a new electrical and control part, complete representation of paint job and final assembly of all components. At the end of the thesis, measurements are made to demonstrate the quality of the geometry achieved and the measurements made in turning the workpieces, which showed a remarkable accuracy and repeatability within 0. 01 mm in operation and machining. It also presents suggestions for future work and steps to upgrade and improve the performance of the universal lathe.
