This article considers how to effectively include literary texts, especially poetry, in teaching Slovenian as a second and foreign language. It proceeds from an awareness of the specific features of literary texts, which can be a challenge for users when reading a foreign language, but also an advantage when a suitable methodological approach is used. It presents a model for the use of poetry in teaching Slovenian as a second and foreign language, which takes into account the specificities of reading poetry in a foreign language. It is divided into three phases: the preparation and empowerment phase, the reception and meaning-making phase, and the development and actualization phase.
