In the modern history of Slovenia, the media are experiencing grave injustice, as their role in Slovenia’s gaining of independence is very often ignored. The aim of this paper is to make readers aware of the importance of the media in Slovenia’s gaining of independence. This paper will thus address Slovenia’s gaining of independence from the perspective of propaganda techniques and the contribution of media structures to the tendency to gain independence. In order to facilitate the understanding of propaganda, we will first address basic terms thereof. Then, in the same chapter, we will explain various models of propaganda. The next chapter will study and present the media space in the former common state of Yugoslavia. This chapter will serve as an introduction into the next chapter discussing the use of the media as the subject of propaganda techniques in Slovenia’s gaining of independence. The chapter will cover the use of propaganda in Slovenia’s gaining of independence until 1990. In this way, the theoretical part of our paper will be concluded. The empirical part will focus on three key events where the audio-visual medium (television) RTV Slovenia comes to the forefront. We will adopt an analytical approach to study Slovenia’s first democratic elections of 1990, the 1990 referendum for an independent and autonomous Slovenia and the 1991 Pekre events. We will analyse several contributions, shows and news programmes from the delimited period provided by TV Dnevnik, with the intention to identify elements of propaganda used by the RTV Slovenia in the key phase of Slovenia’s gaining of independence. After this analysis, we will summarise our thoughts in the conclusion, either confirming or refuting the set hypothesis.
