Waste and its management present a big spatial and ecological challenge in our day and age. Due to the general public’s increasing awareness of the issue, the authorities started to implement measures to combat the problem. This work was created with the intent to study the level of awareness of the waste sorting system in the municipality of Izola and to present suggestions for its improvement. Statistical data on waste management at the European Union, National (Slovenia) and Municipal (Izola) levels are presented and compared. The data shows a general increase in the amount of waste as well as an increase in recycling and reuse. More people are aware of the effects of waste as well as the waste sorting system itself. The interview, conducted with an employee of the waste management company, informs of the challenges they face, their operations and cooperation efforts with the residents. Its performance was reviewed favorably by the people it serves, which can be attributed to the efforts taken to connect with locals. Information gathered with the help of a questionnaire shows that while the majority of people do recycle, a few types of trash are often sorted mistakenly. Sorting quality improves with age and education levels. The identified deficiencies were noted and suggestions were presented for their rectification.
