Abstract

Title:The Zodiac in Carolingian Art
Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to the zodiac as a pagan motif that became part of the Christian iconography of the Middle Ages. The assignment is devoted especially to cases where all twelve signs are shown in the form of a zodiacal diagram or solar chart. The introductory chapters present a brief history of astrology and its position in society, as well as of the concept of the zodiac from antiquity to the Carolingian period. The following parts present the history of zodiac depictions, with an emphasis on the Carolingian period and Carolingian manuscripts, in whose iconographic repertoire the zodiac was often present. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to the process of appropriation and Christianization of the zodiac signs, as well as to the reasons and circumstances that played a great role in this transition.
