Abstract

Title:
Sleep experience in people with chronic non-cancer pain : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than the expected duration of the entire injury and lasts longer than three to six months. People with chronic pain often have sleep problems compared to people without pain. Poor sleep quality negatively affects a person's physical and cognitive state. Purpose: The aim of this work is to investigate the meaning and self-assessment of sleep activity performance and satisfaction with people with chronic pain enrolled in an interdisciplinary pain management program between January and August 2022. Methods: In a retrospective study, we used a quantitative research method. 92 users with chronic pain, with the average age of 51.99 years, were included in the study. Data were collected using the Canadian Occupational Performance measure, which we administered at the beginning and at the end of the interdisciplinary program. The questionnaire focuses on the user's self-assessed performance and satisfaction on a scale from 1 to 10 with the performance of important activities during the day. Results: In the survey, 73% of participants rated the importance of sleep with an average score of 9.01. 32.6% of all individuals included sleeping among the five activities they had the most difficulty performing. The implementation of sleep was rated with an average score of 3.37 at the initial assessment and 5.27 at the final assessment. Satisfaction with sleep was given an average score of 2.43 at the initial assessment and an average score of 5.9 at the final assessment. Discussion and Conclusion: The results of our study show that an interdisciplinary chronic pain management program has a positive effect on development and satisfaction with sleep, as there were clinically and statistically significant differences on both items. The results of our study cannot be compared with the results of other studies that assess sleep in this way. We concluded that sleep is often overlooked and not given enough attention to in occupational therapy treatment.
