The diploma thesis deals with the topic of introducing solar principles in urban planning, which aims to create more sustainable urban neighborhoods. Bearing this in mind, the current methodology for urban planning has been upgraded, with the intent to integrate the energy of the sun and its benefits on buildings and their direct environment. The methodology has been applied to a case study in Ljubljana. The thesis identifies the models and approaches which are essential to incorporate solar energy as well as the ways of designing urban elements and spaces to support that intention. Furthermore, the reviews and results of solar analyses of the case study shows the great potential of with using solar energy in urban areas as a renewable source. The findings of this thesis can provide some helpful insights for planners and architects during the design phase as well.
