In my diploma thesis, I focused on the application of the principles of normalization in the process of deinstitutionalization in the Social Welfare Institution Dutovlje. In the theoretical part, I first defined the concepts of mental health and mental distress. I defined the importance and consequences of institutionalizing, especially in total institutions. In this chapter, I explained the process in total institutions and the stigmatization of users in more detail. In the following, I focused on deinstitutionalization, the history of deinstitutionalization in Slovenia and the process of deinstitutionalization in the Social Welfare Institution Dutovlje. In the conclusion of the theoretical part, I presented the concept and meaning of normalization and the principles of normalization according to David Brandon.
In the empirical work, I devoted myself to enforcing the principles of normalization in the process of renovation of the Dutovlje Social Welfare Institution through observation with participation and conducting interviews with users and employees of the institution. I determined the implementation of the principles and the level of normalization using Brandon's principles of normalization.
