Abstract

Title:Conceptual urban-architectural design of a performing arts center for the visuallyimpaired in the central urban area of Skopje
Abstract:
This master's thesis concerns the dynamic relationship between conventional and nonconventional performance and the spaces that support and stimulate them. The research defines 'nonconventional' performance as performances that engage alternative concepts of sensorial experience; particularly performative experiences--performers and audience--by those who are visually impaired. Both research and project seek to spatially define fluid intersectional relationships between those who embody all sensorial attributes and those whose sensorial perceptions are transformed by way of sensorial exclusion and hence, the redistribution of sensorial hierarchies. The architectural project, given its siting in Skopje, Macedonia, also demands research into the cultural and formal conditions evident in both site-specific and peripheral contexts. The key formal concept is derived partly by the site and its urban quadrants; hence the architectural design clearly defines two open and relatively transparent sides and two sides--exhibition spaces and library--that serve as architectural filters between the existing urban density and performance. In effect, performance is held within the embrace of these differing quadrants and connective programs. The architectural integration of these research factors serves to create transformative spaces of inclusivity, and as such the architectural language seeks to form spaces that can morph with differing performative needs fostered by alternative sensorial concepts. This inclusivity is also achieved through the connection between the observers of performances and the performers themselves; the transformable centralized performance space connects the two and redefines the conventional social distances created by so-called 'normative' sensorial perceptions and the obvious segregations that have historically occurred through perceptual hierarchical differences.
