Abstract

Title:Characterisation of the measurement performance of a portable Lidar
Abstract:
The main topic we were interested in was the measurement performance of the low-cost portable LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), which is available on the market. We wanted to see how well it performs as a device for measuring and designing interior spaces. We approached the problem in a systematic way, starting with a basic distance measurement. We found that the results can be obtained very quickly, but that they may not be the most reliable, especially at slightly longer distances. We then checked how well LIDAR detects small objects or changes in geometry and found that it is successful at small distances, but that distances quickly become too large, and the results are not satisfactory. Finally, we showed how the location of LIDAR in space affects the measurements obtained and the plotted floor plan of the room. It is best to use LIDAR in relatively small rooms and to place it as centrally as possible, or closer to the walls that are of most interest to us.
