Abstract

Title:
Cross-curricular Integration of Dance Arts in Kindergarten
Abstract:
This paper presents interdisciplinary integration of dance art with other fields from the Kindergarten Curriculum – nature, mathematics, society, language, music and fine arts. Different studies confirm that approaches ensuring children to actively learn about different topics performing motor activities on their own lead to quality and more permanent learning. The theoretical part first defines dance and its importance for children’s holistic development. It determines goals of dance art, its importance in preschool and an intermediary model. It goes on to describe the Kindergarten Curriculum and present possibilities of interdisciplinary integration of dance art with other fields of the curriculum. It also lists different incentives in dance creation, as these are very important for interdisciplinary integration. The aim of the empirical part is to demonstrate how to plan activities integrating topics from a certain field of the curriculum with dance art. It also presents examples of interdisciplinary integration which we performed in preschool. In doing so, our aim was to familiarise children with goals of different fields, determine if their participation in the activities differs whether or not different aids are included in the activity and study their reactions to the performed activities. I determined that interdisciplinary integration allows and offers a wide array of possibilities, as such activities are more complex, encourage active learning, and, at the same time, impact children’s holistic development. Children achieved progress from one activity to another, especially in terms of their movements, which were becoming more complex and more creative.
