Wood pellets are wood fuels used in modern stoves and heating systems. They have a relatively low hygromoisture content, which enables relatively high efficiency when burned. In most cases, they are made of beech and spruce wood. The use of pellets is extremely welcome both from the point of view of energy independence and ecological variability.
As part of diploma thesis presents wood pellets, the production of wood pellets, their combustion, and the applicable standards in the aforementioned field. The calorimeter system IKA C200 is also presented, which is used to determine the heat of combustion of wood pellets. In addition, the processes that take place during combustion are described. We analyzed wood pellets from various manufacturers that are available on the Slovenian market today.
For each individual type of wood pellets, we measured the proportion of hygromoisture and ash in the experimental work, and carried out an elemental analysis of the ash with a scanning electron microscope and determined the most important energy parameter – calorific value.
