Introduction: Chronic non-communicable diseases are a major public health problem and the most common cause of deaths worldwide. In the field of prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases in Slovenia, health education centers were established in community health centers. Some of them were later upgraded to health promotion centers. The task of leading health promotion centers is performed by registered nurses. Purpose: The purpose of this Master's thesis is to identify the main competencies needed by leaders of health promotion centers to perform managing tasks and to prepare a programme proposal for the establishment of training for leaders of health promotion centers on the basis of identified competencies. Methods: A descriptive method of work with a review of scientific and professional literature has been used. A survey questionnaire developed specifically for the purpose of the reaserch was used as a measuring instrument. The obtained results were analyzed by factor analysis. Data was analysed with descriptive statistics (frequency and mean). Results: 117 respondents completed the questionnaire, of which 21 (17.9%) represented the leaders of health promotion centers and 96 (82.1%) represented other members of the standard team. Eight competencies of managing health promotion centers were identified: Operational management, Identification of needs, Interaction, Implementation of change, Mediation, Resource management, Responsiveness and Human resource management. There is currently no existing training where the leaders of health promotion centers can obtain knowledge, skills and abilities. Based on the identified competencies, we prepared a proposal for a training programme for the leaders of health promotion centers. Discussion and conclusion: Managing a health promotion center is a unique and demanding task where it is important that it is performed by a competent person. The identified competencies of leading health promotion centers provide the set of knowledge, skills, abilities and some personality traits that leaders need to perform in their role. The programme proposal of training for leaders of health promotion centers is based on identified competencies. We named the programme proposal of training ‘Training for Leaders of Health Promotion Centersʼ.
