NCO is the backbone of the modern military. He is responsible for his soldiers and represents a nexus between officer's commands and effective execution of the mission. It is NCO's responsibility to equip, train and enable soldiers to perform the required tasks, so the modern army can compete in the job market. World War 2 was the event, when officers could no longer solely lead armies to the victory, thus the importance of NCOs grew since then. Asymmetric warfare only accelerated the increase of the intensity. First Gulf war, fought the early 1990s, was the last classic war. Irregular warfare shattered the once great armies into small, tactically sound units, which perform tasks of modern combat with surgical precision. NCOs are the ones, who train, lead and supervise soldiers in modern, extremely complex environment. New, yet everlasting technological changes will from soldiers demand a never–ending new set of skills. Complexity of modern warfare will never stop growing. Regular solder will have to adapt, more will be required of him. This adaption will only be possible with the help of the NCOs.
