Abstract

Title:Ethical dilemmas of librarians in authority control of authors and subject headings in Slovenia
Abstract:
The most important value in libraries is the provision of equal access to library services. Authority control is also closely related to this value, which enables unambiguous identification of titles, authors, and subject headings in the library catalogue. As the aspect of ethics in the field of authority control is not well studied in Slovenia, in the master's thesis we investigated three different views on ethical dilemmas in authority control. We were interested in the opinion of editors of authority files, authors described in databases, and representatives of societies dealing with potential library users belonging to marginalized groups. In interviews with the editors of CONOR.SI, SSSG, and SGC, we have learned that only personal data which is needed for their unambiguous identification is collected about authors, and in case of the author's disagreement, their data is withdrawn. In the SSSG and SGC subject heading lists, subject headings are updated according to professional terminology and are also added or edited based on the requests of librarians or authors. In interviews with representatives of societies in the field of marginalized groups, we have identified only one questionable subject heading and recognized the insufficient and inconsistent content description as a bigger problem. The results of the survey with Slovenian authors have shown that they find the publication of personal details that are not good distinguishing data questionable. Therefore, it is important that in Slovenia, even after the implementation of the RDA standard, personal contact with authors is used as an important source of information about authors and publications.
