In some places, speeding and reckless driving on the roads sometimes needs to be moderated with traffic-calming devices and measures. Their primary purpose is to support good living conditions in residential and commercial areas by improving the safety, mobility, and comfort of non-motorized traffic participants. Latter is achieved by reducing vehicle speeds and volumes on streets or street networks. In the master's thesis, I reviewed the Slovenian technical specifications for traffic calming TSC 03.800: 2009 Traffic calming devices and measures, and measures and solutions used abroad. I determined the appropriate measures on different categories of roads and their effectiveness in reducing vehicle speed, volume, noise, emissions and ensuring the safety of more vulnerable participants in traffic. For better clarity, I prepared an overview table with this information. I reviewed examples of traffic calming from abroad and suggested the use of a few in our country – speed kidneys (traffic calming islands), speed cushions, road-diets (lane reduction), and centreline removals. In a practical example, I demonstrated traffic calming at the pedestrian crossing on a section of a local road Cankarjeva ulica (LZ 054171) in Črnomelj. Two variants were proposed – two-sided narrowing of the carriageway with alternating one-way traffic (variant A) and the installation of a speed kidney (variant B).
