Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is a fantasy novel (originally published in Germany as Das Parfum) by German author Patrick Süskind, published in 1985. At first sight, the novel explores the sense of smell and its relationship with the emotional meaning that different scents can have for an individual. But it is also a novel about identity, communication and the mortality of the human spirit.
The core of the master's thesis is the novel and its film adaptation. I will focus on a comparative analysis of the work in both media. I will examine the relationship between literature and film as two different artistic genres. The main aim of the thesis is to find and analyse the differences and similarities between the literary template and the film. The theoretical part of the master thesis will be based on the relationship between literature and film and on the ways in which a literary work can be translated into a film form.
