Introduction: Same-sex orientation or homosexuality is sexual orientation toward a person or persons of the same sex. When people disclose their sexual orientation, they usually go through four stages. Most homosexuals hide their orientation until they enter into a relationship with a partner. Same-sex partnership is defined by the Partnership Act, where same-sex partners have the same legal rights as a heterosexual marriage. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma thesis is to explore homosexual families and to present what opportunities homosexual partners have in starting a family and what emotions they experience in starting a family. We are interested in the role of midwives, how they accept homosexually oriented women in childbirth and how they treat them. We are also interested in women's experiences and well-being in the hospital setting. Methods: We used a literature review for the thesis. Professional and scientific literature from 2009 to 2022 in Slovenian and English was used. For the literature search we used different databases such as: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Springer Link, Wiley Online. Library, COBISS in Google Scholar. Results: For the final review, we included 12 sources, which we classified into a hierarchy of evidence. Homosexual women who desire children generally have a difficult path to motherhood. They face social and legal restrictions. In Slovenia, they do not have the right to assistance with artificial insemination. Most lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) couples around the world report positive experiences working with a midwife during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Yet their awareness of the community is low. Midwives and other health care workers need to shed their prejudices, if they have any, or leave lesbian mothers to their colleagues. Discussion and Conclusion: More and more homosexual couples want to start a family, but experience a stressful time during the planning process because of societal prejudices and legal restrictions. More research is needed in the area of homosexuality, with a focus on their families and healthcare relationship. In addition, midwives and other health care workers would need additional training to reduce stigma and improve care at birth.
