Abstract

Title:Breast self-examination: a cross-sectional study of knowledge and attitudes of midwifery students : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and presents a public health problem. In rare cases, men can also be affected by it. The incidence has been steadily increasing over the years. If detected at an early stage, there is a high probability of a cure. Precisely because of the importance of early detection, a regular self-examination of the breasts is very important, where a woman can detect any change and visit a doctor in time. Breast self-examination is a simple screening method. Midwives play an important role in health and educational field. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to examine the attitude and knowledge of third-year midwifery students and midwifery graduates about breast self-examination. Methods: Review of the literature was made. In the empirical part, a quantitative work method was used with the help of an online survey questionnaire. All respondents were informed about the purpose of the research, they were guaranteed voluntary participation and anonymity. Results: 28 midwifery students participated in the research. Everyone has heard of breast self-examination, but most of them do not perform it. To a large extent, students know from what age and when the self-examination should be performed according to the menstrual cycle and its recommended frequency. About 17 % of students educate women about breast self-examination in their work. The study program Midwifery, health professionals and the media were cited as the main sources of information about breast cancer. Discussion and conclusion: Most students believe that midwives should participate in breast cancer prevention programs. Almost all respondents would like to learn more about breast self-examination.
