Architectural heritage presents itself as an interesting conservation-restoration problem. Its versatility and sheer size of potential problems demand an interdisciplinary approach and is therefore quite a challenge. To take on the challenge of preservation, conservation and restoration of architectural object, I have decided to research this topic more thoroughly in my master thesis. In focus of the thesis there is a façade of an existing historic architecture.
The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part covers topics on more theoretical level. I did a research on basic guidelines that show set standards for conservation-restoration work on architectural work. Next, basic structural and material composition of an historic building envelope is presented. The explanation and interpretation of the most common expected damage found on historic facades follows. There is also presented an overview of some conservation-restoration procedures, which can serve as a guidance during restoration of previously listed damage.
For optimal results when doing the architectural conservation-restoration work in an interdisciplinary team of experts, it is very important to have some level of understanding of all different areas of participating expertise. That led me to expand my research in more technical and construction area. I was especially interested in energy efficiency performance of historic building envelope and how are energy efficiency upgrading measures of historic facades compatible with conservation-restoration principles.
In the second part I use knowledge from theoretical part and expand it to more practical case of Vila Angela, secession villa from Ljubljana. The façade of the villa is in a very poor condition and is in need of restoration. Practical part of the thesis follows the scheme of a conservation-restoration plan for the façade of the Vila Angela.
