Abstract

Title:Ambidextrous manipulation of virtual objects with haptic interface
Abstract:
Ambidextrous execution of therapeutic upper limb rehabilitation exercises is proving to be an effective method of accelerating recovery in patients who have suffered a cerebral stroke. Most research in this area is conducted with systems designed for the impaired side of the body only. Therapies enabled by virtual reality have been shown to have a proven positive impact on the rehabilitation of patients who have suffered a brain stroke. In the scope of this master's thesis, a virtual reality application was developed that enables ambidextrous manipulation of virtual objects through an optical tracking module, a modified table mounted armrest and a haptic glove. Within the application, an exercise is implemented that requires the cooperation of both hands of the user's hands. The application is capable of collecting and recording the state of the virtual environment and the user during use. The data is recorded in a way that allows accurate and precise analysis of the recorded events. The development of the entire system is thoroughly described and explained in detail. The solution was used and tested by healthy individuals. A thorough analysis and interpretation of the collected data is presented. Further testing on patients who have suffered a stroke is needed to better determine the functional contribution of the system for rehabilitation.
