The thesis discusses the link between volunteering and helping people addicted to illicit drugs.
The theoretical part of the thesis includes definitions of addiction and volunteering, followed
by a discussion of the workflow in drug dependence treatment and a study of the role of
volunteers and volunteering in these programmes. In the empirical part of the thesis, qualitative
research based on the theoretical background was carried out. We used a semi-structured
interview with additional sub-questions, following the interview guidelines. The sample
included six volunteers who have volunteered or are still volunteers in various drug dependence
treatment programmes. The thesis research aimed to determine why people choose to volunteer
in drug dependence treatment programmes and what motivates them to do so. We were also
interested in how they described their role as volunteers and how they defined the role of
volunteering in drug dependence treatment programmes.
