Modern military diving is a relatively young form of warfare, divided into several genres, including mine countermeasures diving. To this end, the technology needed to operate as military divers has historically been developed. The seas still contain unexploded ordnance (UXO), remnants of past armed conflicts, which still pose a threat to maritime transport, the marine environment and military forces, both foreign and domestic. Unexploded ordnance was also present in the Slovenian water area and had to be removed to allow unimpeded and safe passage for vessels, both civilian and military. The Slovenian Armed Forces Diving Unit, called the Special Underwater Operations Detachment, which operates within the Naval Forces of the 430th Naval Division, is the only military unit of its kind currently in existence in the Republic of Slovenia that is dedicated to this type of operation.
