This diploma thesis researches the directions of sustainable development in Ljubljana. First, we defined the term sustainable development, we problematized it and found its alternatives. Second, we focused on researching the available public documentation regrading sustainable development on international, European, national, and urban levels. We defined and described the term sustainable urban development and summarized Ljubljana’s development over time. Our goal was to evaluate directions, goals and measures presented in the City Municipality of Ljubljana's Sustainable urban strategy until the year 2030. We discovered that Ljubljana declares itself a sustainable city and is performing sustainable measures, whilst also performing many unsustainable ones. These unsustainable measures are often linked with the effort to develop a neoliberal city. Furthermore, we analyzed international sustainable development indexes and compared Ljubljana with other European cities that share the same international treaties regarding sustainable development. Our results show that Ljubljana often ranks below average in these sustainable indexes, which suggests that there is still a lot of room for improvement for Ljubljana in sustainable aspects. This evaluation of Ljubljana’s sustainability is just a part of a broader context of Ljubljana’s development. To further expand this research, we would have to perform a quality and in-depth analysis researching the divide between the declared and executed measures.
