This work presents the circuit and operating principle of a self-calibrating CMOS comparator for use in analog to digital converters. The first part explains the need for calibration and presents various methods of automatic offset cancellation. Thermal noise and flicker noise (1/f noise) and ways to reduce their effects are also explained. In the second part, the individual parts that comprise the comparator circuit are presented and their function is explained. Simulations used to measure the comparators performance are explained and their results are shown. Lastly, some possible areas of improvement are mentioned.
