Abstract
Opazovana populacija so bili otroci, stari 3–5 let. Območje opazovanja je predstavljala občina Zagorje ob Savi. Prostorske informacije s področja okolja v Sloveniji smo našli v dostopnih zbirkah prostorskih podatkov.

Title:Assessment and use of data from epidemiological studies for spatial presentation: an example of determining arsenic exposure in the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi : master thesis
Abstract:
Introduction: Arsenic is a poisonous substance and can cause various health problems, which is a reason for concern in every stage of life, especially during childhood. In the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi an epidemiological study titled “Refined risk assessment for children’s health due to arsenic exposure in the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi” was carried out. Purpose: With the example of data obtained from the “Refined risk assessment for children’s health due to arsenic exposure in the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi” study methodology was prepared for the implementation of spatial presentation of the data obtained in the epidemiological studies. The quality of such data for spatial presentations preparation was assessed. Methods: The data about arsenic exposure was obtained from laboratory analysis of morning urine samples. The population observed were children aged 3 to 5 years. Observation area was the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi. Spatial information regarding environment in Slovenia was found in accessible spatial databases. Geographic coordinates for children’s addresses, companies and plants and former antimony mines were obtained so that they could be used in geographic information system. Input data quality was assessed from the spatial presentation perspective. Spatial data layers were made as a basis for spatial presentation. Correlation between arsenic concentration and the distance of the children’s home from possible sources of arsenic was assessed. Results: Collected input data needed for spatial presentations were represented in a chart. We found the data were of sufficient quality to be used in a spatial presentation. The location of the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi was spatially presented on a map of Slovenia, as were settlements, brooks and potential natural or anthropogenic sources of arsenic in the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi. Children living closer to the potential natural or anthropogenic sources of arsenic did not have higher concentration of arsenic in urine than those living further from the sources. Discussion and conclusion: When preparing spatial presentations high quality input data must be used. Spatial presentations are a welcome addition to the presentation of different data obtained from laboratory analyses and surveys. They can be used for additional analyses studying the effects of distance between certain points. A developed methodological approach can be used for other analyses from the fields of health and environment.
