In my thesis, I researched the topic of the nativity scene. The theoretical part consists of the historical look at the event of Jesus’s birth, the development of its depiction, how the tradition of setting up nativity scenes was experienced on Slovenian ground, what kinds of nativity sets we can find on the market today, and the comparison of some of the world-famous artistic nativity sets. After setting the foundation in theory, I started developing the idea for my final work through sketches, paper and clay models, and consultations with my mentor and co-mentor. I reflected upon my experience of Christmas traditions, my perception of the family roles of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and the manner in which I – through designing of a nativity set – could present my own family and life values. When I set the course for my design, I started working on its physical counterpart. Firstly, I produced the porcelain component, secondly, the glass sphere, and lastly, the wooden frame according to the porcelain’s dimensions. Finally, I analyzed and evaluated the work process.
The finished work is an independent, conclusive unit, which can be exhibited not just at Christmas time, but throughout the whole year.
