Abstract

Title:The motif of Adam and Eve in High Medieval art
Abstract:
This final assignment explores the formation of Eve's role as the main sinner through the Old Testament story of original sin, further emphasising the link between nakedness and sinfulness. The first part of the thesis presents the biblical story of Adam and Eve in the literary form in which it is found today, while also highlighting comparisons with different versions of the primary Bibles. In the next section, the literary sources of various Christian writers are given, shedding light on the development of the idea of sinfulness itself and on the development of the connection between nakedness and sinfulness, with the emphasis again on Eve as a sinner. In the last part, the text is devoted to an analysis of five works of art produced between the 11th and the 13th centuries in the context of Western European art. These works show the power and influence of the earliest writers on the medieval interpreters, as well as the impact of church dogma on the formation of the image of Eve as a sinner and, consequently, on the role of women in society at that time.

Keywords:Adam, Eve, sin, guilt, nudity, sexuality, Medieval Ages
