Abstract

Title:Sexuality among people with a colostomy : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Healthcare professionals tend to focus on post-stoma treatment, neglecting patients' sex life, which is of great importance for their overall well-being and health. Because sexuality is an integral part of the whole person, it is very important to pay attention to it. Purpose: The aim of the thesis was to identify and present the sexuality and sexual relationships of people with colostomy. We wanted to find out how colostomy affects patients' lives and to present the role of healthcare providers in adapting to changes that affect quality of life. We also wanted to present the lived experience of the impact of colostomies on the sex lives of gay men. Methods: The descriptive method of work was used, namely a narrative review of professional and scientific, domestic and foreign literature. Results: The results show that both sexuality and LGBTIQA+ issues for people with stoma are still taboo for nurses and health professionals, which can have a significant impact on their quality of life. The results also show that nursing diagnoses do not address gender identity, which is a problem in identifying and addressing the nursing problems of gay men with colostomy. Discussion and conclusion: Improvements and the introduction of appropriate nursing interventions are needed to respond to the needs of people with colostomy in the areas of gender identity and sexuality. Appropriate health education and nursing care focused on the individual and their loved ones could improve the individual domains of quality of life, thus ensuring holistic care for LGBTIQA+ people. Special attention should also be given to additional education and training of health professionals in LGBTIQA+ health.
